It's Harvest Time at Applegate Jesuit Retreat Center

It is fruit season in our little town of Applegate in Northern California. Please enjoy these photos from the grounds (and a few from our nearby community). For a list of plants featured, see bottom of page (or don’t peek and identify them yourself!) You can also come take a look in person as we are able to host small groups on a limited basis; email the Site Director, or call  (530) 878-2776 for more information.

Remember to never pick anything unless:

  1. You are in an area that allows it.

  2. The plant population won’t suffer from over-picking.

  3. You can reliably identify what you are picking and can be sure it’s safe to eat!

Regarding #3, can you tell which photo(s) contains berries from the Pokeweed plant? They look tasty and the birds love ‘em, but just a few berries can give you a terrible stomach-ache! Many edible plants have poisonous look-a-likes, so practice caution while enjoying and respecting nature.

Plants featured:

  • Grapes

  • Apricots

  • Figs

  • Pokeweed (Pokeberries)

  • Pears

  • Blackberries

  • Tree with Small Pink Fruit (unknown – please let us know if you recognize it!
